Bodkin Pointe Press, What’s in a name? Well, in this case, a lot. Bodkin Pointe, where the company name comes from, is rich in history.  A 265-acre peninsula in Pasadena, Maryland takes it name from a medieval arrowhead called a “bodkin”, which the point of land somewhat resembles.  Bodkin Pointe’s  historical significance includes its first residents, which were Indians, and the first European settlers who arrived in the 1600’s and turned the area into farmland until the 20th century. Then on August 24, 1814 while British troops were attacking Washington, D.C., a minor skirmish in the War of 1812 was taking place at Bodkin Point, which is near the mouth of the Patapsco River south of Baltimore.  Also, this point was the site of the Maryland’s first lighthouse which was built in 1822; hence the logo for the publishing company.  Unfortunately, the lighthouse no longer stands.  It was destroyed in a storm in 1914, which brought the structure down.

Still more historical significance lies in the history of Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad.   In 1850, Harriet helped her first slaves escape to the North. She sent a message to her sister's oldest son that said for her sister and family to board a fishing boat in Cambridge. This boat would sail up the Chesapeake Bay where they would meet Harriet in Bodkin's Point (as it was known then). When they got to Bodkin's Point, Harriet guided them from safe house to safe house in Pennsylvania (which was a free state) until they reached Philadelphia.

Bodkin Pointe Press, established in January 2000, is a small independent publishing company dedicated to publishing quality children's books. Recently, Bodkin Pointe Press also took on the role of marketing and distribution for other author’s books.
